Bob Seger live Q&A: Bob Seger on His Greatest Hits and Next Album

Bob Seger, 66, certainly hasn't forgotten how to rock. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004, the Detroit icon is in the midst of his second North American tour this year. (The run wraps Dec. 30 in Las Vegas, with a make-up date in South Carolina on Jan. 14.) His just-released compilation, "Ultimate Hits: Rock and Roll Never Forgets" (Capitol), packs a career-spanning collection of hits and rarities ("Little Drummer Boy" from 1987's "A Very Special Christmas") as well as covers of Tom Waits' "Downtown Train" and Little Richard's "Hey Hey Hey Hey (Going Back to Birmingham)" onto two discs. And if all goes well, 2012 will bring a new studio album, his first since 2006's "Face the Promise" (Capitol/EMI).

It must be a trip to compile Ultimate Hits and realize just how much enduring music you've made.

Well, you hope that's the case, but you really don't know. People choose to like what they like, and you can't control that, ever. What's amazing to me still, is how much airplay we've gotten down through the years. We've never really gone away, and even the Beatles have gone away for stretches of time. But we never seem to go off the radio. I'm very grateful for that.

You had a particularly fertile period between "Night Moves and The Distance," maybe even "Like a Rock." What were you taking back then?

[Laughs] I really don't know. That was an era -- [from] '75 to '81 -- when I was writing a lot of songs, even though I didn't have a whole lot of time to write. We were [performing] a lot more than we are now, and I was recording, which took much more time than it does now because I was like [Bruce] Springsteen-I was like a crazy man. I'd get in there and live in the studio, and I didn't know what I was doing, so it took me a long time. But I don't know why I wrote those songs in that time period. I don't know what was going through my mind. I was just busy.

You've been nominated for the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Is that a different kind of honor than the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?

I'm very grateful because I really work hard on [songwriting]. I like to think that, like [Don] Henley says, I leave a little blood on the page, and work really hard on my lyrics and chord changes and structures and everything. So it's pretty heartening to get that nod. I have some stiff competition, so we'll see what happens.

You recently entered the digital realm after years of holding out.

It hasn't really changed anything for me because I've never owned an iPod. I don't download. My wife bought me an iPad and I never even picked it up -- I gave it to my son. I'm old school. I go out and buy CDs because I think the sound of a CD is better than the sound of an MP3, and even over that I prefer the sound of vinyl. My son and his friends are really into vinyl. They go down to my basement and break into my records all the time.

What's the status of your next studio album?

I've got six [songs] that I really, really like, and I'd like to have six more that I feel that way about because then I don't have to use anything old and it'll all be fresh. That's why I want to stop [touring on Dec. 30], because there's nothing for me to do here in Michigan in winter-I'm going to try snowmobiling this year, but I certainly don't ski-so I can sit and write for three solid months, January through March. I should be able to come up with something good in three months. Then come April, I'll record what I've got, we'll put it out in the fall and then do another tour.

You've made comments about coming off the road for good after this tour.

[Laughs] Well, we'll see. I take it tour by tour. I'll tell you on Dec. 31, because I don't know how my body's going to react. I could retire Jan. 1 in a heartbeat, but I never know. I'm 66. I don't know if I want to do this when I'm 67. But I still love doing it, and I love the band we've got now. So we'll see.

Gaga & Bruno Among Grammy Concert (Fashion) Winners

Although it was merely an hour-long concert for the Grammy nominations, there were plenty of fashion winners that arose at the event. From Ladyt Gaga's zombified look to Katy Perry's sweet pink lace creation, the evening spawned glowing and gorgeously ghoulish ensembles.

Lady Gaga's latest music video opus, "Marry The Night," made its way online on Thursday afternoon (Dec. 1), hours before the clip was set to premiere on E! at 8:00 pm EST. Directed by Gaga, the 13-minute music video features the pop star at her most gloriously provocative, with extended dance sequences, explosions, nudity, and a violent attack on a box of Honey Nut Cheerios.

The video opens with a pale, unconscious Gaga begin wheeled through a hospital on a gurney, as she says in a voiceover, "It's not that I've been dishonest. It's just that I loathe reality." Soon, she's coping with that harsh reality by tearfully declaring to a nurse who is taking her vitals, "I'm gonna be a star. You know why? Because I have nothing left to lose."

The video then shifts gears and finds Gaga freaking out in a hotel room, spouting French and silently dying her hair in a bathtub. Her transformation is complete: she steps out of a car that has just exploded as a reborn pop singer, and commands an army of dancers in the darkened streets as the "Born This Way" single plays on.

Last night, Lady Gaga both kicked off and closed the Grammy Nominations Concert, with a spirited performance of "Marry The Night" followed by a countrified version of "You and I" alongside Sugarland. Gaga ended the night with three Grammy nominations, including an Album of the Year nod for "Born This Way." "Marry The Night" is currently at No. 59 on the Hot 100, up from No. 97 the previous week.

Gaga took to Twitter on Thursday to express dissatisfaction with the music video arriving online early, writing that the video was leaking "like an old tampon." She quickly followed, "Although I do appreciate that really sneaky monsters are flipping out :)."

Bruce Springsteen

The South By Southwest Music and Media Conference and Festival announced this morning that Bruce Springsteen will be keynote speaker for next year's event.

The keynote will take place on Thursday, March 15, 2012 at the Convention Center in Austin, Texas, the hub of SXSW Music events.

"His recordings include time-tested classics of rock and acoustic-based albums celebrating folk traditions," the SXSW press release reads. "His live shows are truly fervent celebrations of the communal power of music. As SXSW fosters connection and communication in the music community, this event will undoubtedly further those aims in an unique conference session."

At press time, there were also rumors of a Springsteen club show during the conference, although that's not likely to be confirmed until it actually happens.

The keynote announcement comes at a pivotal time in Springsteen's career. Having endured the loss of two key, long-serving members of his E Street Band in recent years -- organist Danny Federici in 2008 and, last summer, saxophonist Clarence Clemons -- he recently announced a new album and tour for next year.

Previous keynote speakers at the annual event include industry legends such as Smokey Robinson, Neil Young and Johnny Cash.

Jersey Shore

He's talked about it, but now Pauly D is officially a member of 50 Cent's music group.

The "Jersey Shore" star officially signed to the rapper's G-Note label Thursday. The label focuses on dance and pop music - a good fit for Pauly D, since he's known as a DJ as well as a reality star.

He's been working in music since he was 16 and parlayed his success on the MTV hit series into becoming an in-demand DJ. Pauly D even joined Britney Spears for a few dates on her recent "Femme Fatal" tour as an opening act.

A few months ago Pauly D confirmed that he and the rapper were working together.

50 Cent said Pauly D was a "great addition to G-Note and G-Unit family" and called him smart and creative.
